Transferring Pictures to Your Web Page
Pictures can greatly improve the content of a web page.
If you have a web page on a Linux system and normally work
on an MS Windows system, the following instructions may help you
to add pictures to your web page.
- Assumptions
- The name of the Linux system you are using is
linuxhost.dowling.edu, e.g. arcib.dowling.edu
or mcs.dowling.edu.
- Your user name on the Linux system is username
- Your web pages are in a directory in your account on the
Linux system called public_html
- Overview of the steps
- Prepare the Linux system
- Prepare the Windows system
- Get the picture onto the Windows system
- Transfer the picture to the Linux system
- Add a link for the picture to your web page on the Linux system
- Prepare the Linux system
You only need to do this once
- Log into your account on the Linux system
- cd public_html
- mkdir images
- Prepare the Windows system
You only need to do this once
- Start up your windows system
- Find or create a folder, e.g. C:\Temp, to hold your pictures
- We will use C:\Temp as the folder in the remainder of
this discussion. Substitute the name of your folder if it is different.
- Download the program PSCP and put it into C:\Temp (see step 2
in vnc.html)
- Get the picture onto the Windows system
- Option 1: Locate a picture you have permission to use
from the web, and save it into C:\Temp. Some brwsers will offer you the
opportunity to save a picture by right-clicking on it.
- Option 2: Create the picture with a drawing application on your
Windows system and save it in C:\Temp as a JPG, GIF or BMP file.
- As an example, we assume the picture is called mypic.jpg
- Transfer the picture to the Linux system
- Open an MSDOS or CMD window on the MS Windows system
- In the CMD window use cd to change the C:\TEMP
- execute the command
.\pscp mypic.jpg
username@linuxhost.dowling.edu:public_html/images/
- The use of an images directory is optional -- it just helps to organize
your pictures
- Add a link for the picture to your web page on the Linux system
- Within the body of your web page, include
<img src="images/mypic.jpg">
- If the file your transfered is not a JPG, GIF or BMP, don't use
the img tag, use an anchor instead, e.g.
<a href="images/myppt.ppt">click here</a>
