This is the second quiz for BIOL 670/470 to be taken on Thursday, 16 February 2017 during the weekly e-meeting. You have 10 minutes to answer the four questions. You may use the notes on your blog.

Please answer the following questions on this form (or on a paper copy of this form).

  1. Define the t-test. Give a precise, general formula both for t and for df and say what it is good for. Give a specific relevant example from bioinformatics.

  2. Briefly explain in words, not formulae, what ANOVA is, what the Sum of Squares (Between) is, what the Sum of Squares (Within) is, and what the F-ratio is.

  3. Briefly explain what problem is addressed by multivariate ANOVA, how it is similar to ANOVA and how it is different.

  4. At the end of section 2, the authors discuss blood pressure as a "ratio variable". Your blood pressure consists of two numbers -- a higher number, your systolic pressure, and a lower number, your diastolic pressure. Explain what a ratio variable means, and discuss first, whether blood pressure is or is not a ratio variable, and then, considering what the authors have said whether it is statistically appropriate to treat blood pressure as a "ratio variable".
